Dashboard Warning Lights — What Do They Mean?
A warning light's color signals its severity: red = stop/immediate danger, yellow/orange = caution, inspect soon, green/blue = information only.
Red — stop immediately
The oil light (low oil pressure), the temperature light (overheating), sometimes the battery light, or the brake light — these can mean imminent damage; pull over safely and inspect.
Yellow/orange — inspect soon
The check engine light (when steady), ABS light, tire-pressure light, traction light. Driving cautiously is possible but inspect soon. Flashing = danger (see the flashing-light guide).
Green/blue — information
Lights, signals, cruise control… not warnings. Read your manual for its specific symbols.
FAQ
More than one red light together?
Pull over safely immediately and do not continue — it may be a serious fault (oil/heat/electrical).
Does OBD2 explain the light?
For the check engine light, yes (it reads the code). Some lights (oil/temp) are direct sensor warnings needing mechanical inspection.
