EGR Valve: What It Is and Why It Fails
The EGR valve routes some exhaust gas back into the intake to cut emissions and combustion temperature. Carbon buildup in it is common and causes annoying symptoms.
Its job
It lowers combustion temperature and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by recirculating a measured amount of exhaust. It works only under certain conditions (usually not at cold idle).
Clog/fault symptoms
Stuck closed: idle may be normal but emissions higher and sometimes knock. Stuck open: rough idle, stumbling, or stalling. A code is usually stored (e.g. P0401/P0402).
The fix
Cleaning the valve and passages of carbon often solves it, or replacing it if faulty. Read the code via OBD2 for direction (low/high flow).
FAQ
Clean or replace it?
Start with cleaning (cheaper) if the cause is carbon; replace it if the valve/motor itself is failed.
Rough idle only — could it be EGR?
Possibly (stuck open), but check codes and rule out spark plugs and air leaks too.
