When Should You Replace the Timing Belt?
The timing belt synchronizes the engine. In "interference engines" a snapped belt while driving can destroy valves and pistons — so on-time replacement is critical.
Why critical?
In many (interference) engines a snapped belt slams pistons into valves = costly internal damage. Do not wait for a fault — belts often break without warning.
The interval
It varies a lot by model (usually within a manufacturer range in km or years) — check your manual for the exact figure and do not exceed it.
Signs (not guaranteed)
A ticking noise from the belt cover, hard starting, or visible cracking/wear on inspection. Often there are no signs — so rely on the time/mileage interval.
FAQ
Belt or timing chain?
Some engines use a chain (lasts longer, may not need scheduled change), others a belt (needs scheduled replacement). Know your engine type.
Replace the water pump with it?
Often recommended since it is driven by the same belt and shares labor — saves cost later.
